Make clicking on observation date in Identify modal lead to that day's observations

Platform(s): Website

Description of need:

I run a couple projects that collect host preferences of different fungivorous beetles, which often requires looking through an observer’s observations from the same day to find the species of mushroom the beetle was on. This process usually takes a lot of clicks to get there: clicking on the observation number > the filters to the specific day, month, and year > finding the observation. I use the identify window when doing this because it’s quicker than trying to mess with the explore page. However, the explore page has a feature where you can click on the observed date to be brought to all the observation by that user on that day (see screenshot below). This makes it fast for anyone needing to find same-day observations by that user.

Current observation from the explore page showing the link

Current observation on identify page showing no link

Feature request details:
The observed date on an observation on the identify page should be turned into a link, like the observations on the explore page, that brings you to all the observations by that user on that date.

A faster workaround is to open the observation and scroll to the bottom where you can click on all observations from that user and date.

Just a heads-up, that’s not what’s generally referred to as the “Explore” page. That’s the observation page, sometimes called the observation details page. The Explore page is https://www.inaturalist.org/observations

Would you want it to only show the observations from that user on that date that are still Needs ID? Or all observations, regardless of data quality grade?

I wouldn’t care whether it was all observations or just Needs ID. When I use the Identify page, I usually look at both Needs ID and Research grade observations, but most people probably just look at Needs ID and would rather have just Needs ID show up.

That’s actually slower. The OP’s current solution doesn’t require any scrolling, since the observed date is at the top of the page. So, from the identify page, it’s just two clicks away: one on the View link (which opens in a new tab), and then one on the Observed link.

Well I’ve learnt something. I never realised the date was clickable to give all the observations from that day! I’ve always scrolled to the bottom of the page to get that link. So thanks everyone.

I would say All observations, regardless of data quality grade.
I get around this by opening the obs in a new window (select View by clicking the wheel), then clicking the observed date which gives you exactly this.

What exactly is your process? The screenshot in your question suggests you’re using the identify page to review fungivorous beetles, and from there you want to find the associated fungus observation so you can link to it via an appropriate observation field. But if that’s the case, surely you will always need to see all of the observer’s observations for that day, regardless of their current status?

Personally, I agree that it would be nice if the date on the identify page worked exactly as it does on the observation page (although the current work-around also seems perfectly acceptable). I think most people who need a feature like this would expect to see a complete overview of everything observed by that user for that day, as it’s hard to predict what’s going to be relevant in all cases.

You got it right, I go and find the associated mushroom observation so I can link it in the observation fields.

That would help me yes, but if it would help others for just the Needs ID to show up, I can deal with having to check one box to add Research grade observations.

This other checks if the observer has only a few obs - then I click THAT number. And skim all of them.

TYVM thomaseverest. I didn’t know you could do that! I’ll use it all the time. I’ve been scrolling through page after page in the Observations. :)
