Currently, the header search box on iNat’s website is not “open” by default - you have to click on the magnifying glass icon to open it thusly:

The search box will then stay open until you log out or close it.
Anecdotally, I’ve heard from quite a few users who never knew about its existence, so I propose that by default the search box is open when you log in to iNaturalist, with the option to close it.
Thoughts?
This sounds like a great idea. As you suggested it can be closed if users dont want to use it at that moment.
Yep, a lot of people missed seeing the magnifying glass on the original testing of the new header a couple years ago.
I had no idea it existed until tonight, and I check iNat multiple times a day. +1
OK, this has now been implemented. For signed-in users, the search box is open by default. If you’re not logged in, it’s closed.
