I’m surprised this isn’t a topic, but I searched for it and swear it wasn’t there so let me know if I just missed it.
I’m trying to make a collection project that includes captive and wild organisms, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to include explicitly captive organisms without including observations that aren’t “real” (I guess would be the word I’m looking for?). I have a few work arounds to exclude some observations, but I’m also looking for some ideas on how to exclude others.
No Date: Theoretically, observations without a date should be excluded by adding “date observed- select months- all.”
No Location: There’s no “Earth” location, so I tried adding all seven continents and Oceana, but Antarctica isn’t there. There’s also no location for the oceans it looks like. Antarctica has some community curated zones, but the ocean doesn’t seem to. It’s also hard to tell if I’ve included every area in places where observations are sparse, anyway.
No Photos or Sounds: There’s obviously a way to include only photos, only sounds, or both photos and sounds, but way to include photos OR sounds. The best work around I can think of is to make two copies of the same project, one that uses only sounds and one that uses only photos, then make your ultimate project an umbrella project instead.
Inaccurate Date/Location, (Recent) Evidence of Organism, Evidence Accurately Depicts Organism: I genuinely have no idea how to exclude these.
I think there’s an issue in which if someone tries to create large places, they don’t function properly. And Antarctica is one such large place, even though it’s actually smaller than four continents, as it’s the plate carrée size that matters. It’s the largest continent in the plate carrée, but only slightly bigger than Asia.
Unless I’m getting this wrong, and it’s actually the Mercator size that matters, and Antarctica is infinitely big in the Mercator projection so that’s why the Antarctica place doesn’t work properly.
Or perhaps it’s actually that Antarctica includes all the longitudes, maybe that is verboten.
The oceans could have similar issues. They may be too big in plate carrée and Mercator, infinitely big in Mercator, and include all the longitudes, depending on which specific ocean we’re talking about. Then there’s also the fact that the Pacific ocean includes both the easternmost and westernmost longitude, without including all the longitudes. However, this is also the case with Russia and Asia.
Actually, I think the issue with the oceans is that no one added them. I think is a size limit on places, and there are places bigger than this limit, but they were added before this limit came into effect, or they were added by staff. No one added the oceans before they added the size limit, and now only the staff are allowed to add them. I think the only ocean is the Pacific Ocean, and it wasn’t added properly.
