Step 1: Go to any observation page, even if on a non-mobile browser
Step 2: A big banner is at the top asking “Test the new mobile-friendly responsive layout? Note that not all pages have been converted yet.”
Step 3: The only option is a “Yes” button.
I don’t want to test and there doesn’t appear to be any way to get rid of this banner. It takes up a fair amount of screen real estate and makes it harder to use the platform.
I do most of my IDs on mobile On Android you can use the ML on all the photos in the observation, and it seems to be faster than on my computer when it comes to switching between observations and adding annotations. Zooming in and resolution seems higher to me as well.
There’s also a good add-on that I’ve been using that allows using ML on other photos and doing crops for better suggestions (I like to have it second-guess my first assumption), so that’s gotten my IDs more balanced lately between phone and mobile.
One answer - screen real estate. I get far more done and save a lot of time using a laptop. I’ve tried bulk uploading, bulk cropping, bulk ID even bulk photographing on the phone, doesn’t work for me. Squatting in the veld taking photos = good exercise. Squinting at a puny screen trying to work apace = horrible frustration. That being said, I’ll try the Android app again sometime and see if I get better real estate from the mobile friendly pages.
The feature is about “responsive layout” which can be used in PC too. It is about keeping the page layout in “good shape” even under the stress of small screen estate. You can see the effect by changing the browser size by large amounts with and without the new feature. It is not very important on a PC because normally you will not shrink too much here.
My screen is zoomed in for the font size. In that case, I will try it. Thanks.
Cannot off-hand see a difference in my display.
But.
The banner shrinks ! So that is worth it
Various extensions (e.g. CustomBlocker, for Chrome-based browsers) allow to block page elements. It can be as simple as installing the extension, click its icon, create a new rule, click the naughty ‘banner’, apply.
Puts a band-aid on the issue for me! If you don’t have the Tampermonkey Chrome/Firefox extension, I highly recommend getting it for this, as its free and solves the headache.
Step 1: For the past couple of days, the above banner shows up on my home page. It has a “Yes” button, but no Close or Dismiss button and it seems permanent.
I may or may not take the time to “test the mobile-friendly responsive layout” but I’m already annoyed at being asked. Please make the banner dismissable or make it disappear upon returning to my home page (i.e. one time only display).
