I found this little moth when it dropped from a tree while I was trying to photograph robins, and its left front wing looks more like an old leaf than a wing. What might have caused this? Is it simply an injury or improper development during metamorphosis?

I’m no expert, but it looks as though something went wrong while it was pumping fluid into its wings after it emerged. That one might have been obstructed, or stuck in the cocoon, and didn’t expand properly.
That’s just my guess, though. One of the mothing mavens proabably has a better insight.
