New Place: New York County (2020)

For anyone interested I’ve created a new place for New York County that excludes the western edges of Kings County (Brooklyn) and Queens County. The official boundary for New York County extends to the low water mark along the west end of Long Island including all of Brooklyn Bridge Park which has quite a few observations.

I created a KML file deleting hundreds of points east and north of Manhattan (keeping Marble Hill intact) and placed the boundary approximately midway along the East River, Harlem River and Spuyten Duyvil at the north edge of Manhattan.

New York County includes Manhattan, Governors Island, Roosevelt Island, Randall’s Island, Marble Hill just north of Manhattan, Liberty Island and parts of Ellis Island.

The total observations for the original New York County is ~149.6K with 4,293 species. The New York County (2020) location currently has ~145.6K observations with 4,154 species. It looks like the reindexing is nearly complete since Brooklyn Bridge Park has ~3.8K observations. The difference between the original and the new version of N.Y. County is ~4.0K and the bulk of the non-N.Y. County sightings associated with the original place name are from Brooklyn Bridge Park.
