Description of problem:

Step 1: These observations appeared in my queue when identifying Unknowns.

Step 2: I saw that they have identifications already provided by other users, but the observation taxon is still showing as Unknown

Step 3: When I added the Butterflies identification to 315236446, the Unknown taxon remained, and the observation then went from Needs ID to Casual.

Step 4: This user has opted-out of Community Taxon, but it’s my understanding that any observation with an identification should have an observation taxon.

Thanks for taking a look!

there’s not a bug here. if observers opt out of community ID but provide no ID of their own, then those observations get unknown as the taxon.

Got it. I think I was confused because this is stated twice on this page: “All observations with at least one identification will also have an Observation Taxon.” https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000173076

But now I also see “If for some reason you don’t agree with the Community Taxon, you can reject it on your own observations, which means that Observation Taxon will never be set to the Community Taxon and will always match your own ID.”
