Description of problem:

Step 1: Going through the unknowns.

Step 2: Found this observation from June 2025 from an current and active user with 1 ID from 1 month ago from another current and active user.

Step 3: The observation is still unknown. The Community Taxon isn’t set to opt-out. Is there something else that I’m missing or is this a bug?

It’s probably a reindexing issue. Similar situations have been reported before and there’s nothing staff can do to stop it from happening occasionally. If you interact with the observation at all it will then register the ID correctly. For example, you could fave and unfave it, check and uncheck a DQA vote, or add your own ID.

I tried adding an ID, and it because Casual and still Unknown, despite my ID agreeing with the previous ID. I then deleted my ID, and it went back to the way it was before.

I just did too, it puts the observation as casual but its still unknown. Also just realized the “Evidence related to a single subject” is greyed out in the DQA. Could this have anything to do with the problem?

“Evidence related to a single subject” is grayed out because the observation only has one photo, which is standard.

In my dashboard, this observation shows up under the placeholder name, but if I open it, then the ID is still shown as unknown. Weird.

Okay, that is strange. I can’t see any reason for it to be Casual or Unknown. In the DQA section it says “The below items are needed to achieve Research Grade: Has ID supported by two or more,” even though there are three agreeing IDs. There may be an actual bug here.

This other observation by the same user has the same issue – two IDs, still shows as Unknown and Casual: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/291623010

the user must have opted out of community taxon or at least the system is treating their observations as if they had opted out. here are are couple of examples where the have provided relatively high-level identifications and others have refined the identification, but the observer’s identification shows as the observation taxon:

i’ve never tried opting out myself, and i don’t come across many opt outs. so i’m not sure what exactly happens and what is displayed when you opt out of community taxon. if you opt out at an account level, will that show up on all your observations?

Yes it does

ok.so then the problem is either that the system is incorrectly treating this user’s observations as opt out or else it’s failing to indicate that the user has opted out.

i tried adding a disagreeing identification to another one of the user’s observations just to test another kind of case, and the observation sticks with the observer’s taxon. that behavior suggests the system thinks the user has opted out at a user level, but i see no indicator of this on the observation:

Several other observations by the same user appear to also have this issue:

Observer has some obs which have gone to RG. But random example also does not show as Opted out

Actually, all of his observations have this issue, even the RG ones — if you try to add a disagreeing ID to them, nothing changes.

Hi everyone, I’m the user with all that issues that, I didn’t know that I’d issues or bugs or whatever with this platform. But, yes. Nobody help me with the IDs for years or months. If you know what’s is the problem, tell me please to fix it. If I’ve to delete my account and everything tell me, too. I prefer to keep my mental peace and delete everything.

All the best,

Have you ever turned on/off this option in your account settings?

@tiwane can you look at this please?

Hi, @manuel_sanchez

I just added an ID to this observation of yours: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/296640707. The identification didn’t update, though. This is a problem with the code base, I think, and people are trying to fix it. Please don’t delete your account.
