Old life list shows old user name for people who have changed their name

Please fill out the following sections to the best of your ability, it will help us investigate bugs if we have this information at the outset. Screenshots are especially helpful, so please provide those if you can.

Platform (Android, iOS, Website): Website

Browser, if a website issue (Firefox, Chrome, etc) : Firefox

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages: I can’t publish URLs or screenshots without calling out specific users

Screenshots of what you are seeing (instructions for taking a screenshot on computers and mobile devices: https://www.take-a-screenshot.org/): I can’t publish URLs or screenshots without calling out specific users

Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):

Step 1: From the profile of a user, click “lists”

Step 2: Life lists are shown at the top, with the new version (“dynamic life list”) on the left and the old version on the right. For users who have changed their user name, the old list reveals their old user name, either in the title or the subtext (I have seen both.)

Whattayaknow. Yeah, it does this for me, too.

Made a Github issue here: https://github.com/inaturalist/inaturalist/issues/3755

Hello from 2026! This is still happening for me as well and I would like to not have it shown as the old username reflects my old legal name. Has there been any progress in figuring this out?

The issue was marked as completed in Jan 2025, so they thought they fixed it.

I guess the good news is that the page is pretty obscure so probably not a lot of people will notice.

I just made a bug report for this.

Actually nevermind. That is part of the list’s description and you can edit it out. It’s not something that would be affected by a username change as it’s just a text field that was created when you first joined iNat and not tied directly to the username on file. So I don’t believe it’s a bug.

  1. Go to https://www.inaturalist.org/lists/ritaclare

  2. Click on “ritaclare’s Life List”

  3. Click on “Edit” (here’s a screenshot of where I see that button on my list)

  4. Edit or remove the description and click Save.

Easy peasy! Thank you!!
