Just had an obs. Has been split. Restored my ID. Removed the DQA and my comment. All tidy. No identifiers (or the observer) were harmed 
Unfortunately I find that too many people change things but don’t leave comments even when asked to do so, which is why I tend to wait a bit before adding a DQA. (I even found one the other day where they’d removed the irrelevant photo and added observation notes - which no one gets told about…)
I usually get my notifications because someone else has added an ID or comment.
Yeah, I’ve also found that not commenting after editing (even when I explicitly ask them to) seems to be fairly fairly common. It is rather frustrating – because iNat doesn’t record changes made to the observation, it can make it rather difficult to reconstruct what the original situation was for anyone who comes along later (“photo 3 looks fine to me?”)
Definitely agree - I try to write my comments so it’s clear if there’s been a change (for example, ‘photos 1,2,4 and 5 are one species, 3 is something different’ at least shows there were originally five photos not four). But I’ve certainly looked at records and wondered whether there’s been a change post-comment or not.

Being able to see all images (and not just the first of each observation) in the explorer overview is by far the feature I miss the most in INaturalist. Also pagination would help to speed up the explorer page (example: the ‘unfolded’ and paginated photo browser on Observation.org)
I firmly believe that adding an ‘unfolding’ feature is by far the easiest and most effective update INaturalist can make to increase its usefulness as a reference for traits of more difficult species groups that need multiple traits for a certain identification (such as plants).
When you know users who take good detailed photos of a taxon you’re interested in, the ‘unfold’ option allows you to filter out their observations and to easily see the important ID-features at a glance, without needing to open each observation separately.
