Exclude Kedah:

Check that I’ve excluded these places on my project (Screenshot 4):

Description of problem**:
My project has excluded a place, but I see observations occuring at said place. Filtering to that location, the observation disappears, why?

Step 1: Exclude a place on my project (See my screenshot 4)

Step 2: Go to explore page and filter down to my project (screenshot 1)

Step 3: Observe there are observations made in Penang/ near by Kedah
Step 4: Filter the location to Penang and/or Kedah
Step 5: Observe there are no observations as indicated.
Step 6: File a bug as there are observations in Penang/Kedah but when filtering to those locations & my project, the observations disappear.

I do note that there is one existing project that successfully encapsulated Borneo without any exclusions. But I still want to file this bug. I insist.

I selectively reviewed observations that weren’t passing the project’s filters. It appears they all have very coarse geolocation accuracy, with a radius similar or greater than the province size.

When filtering by location, such observations are automatically excluded to protect obscured observations. In the case of a project, this filtering seems to work according to slightly different rules.

My understanding is that to count as being in a place, the entire accuracy circle of an observation must be in that place. As mentioned by asdan all observations from peninsular malaysia in your project have very large accuracy radii. So large, in fact, that they contain land or ocean outside of the provinces you mentioned. I think you might be better off setting up your project so that rather than including all of Malaysia and then excluding the peninsular provinces you just include the provinces of Sarawak and Sabah.

I don’t think there’s a bug here, I think @yongestation’s suggestion of how to better set up the project is correct.

It’s a bit more complex then that, see this FAQ. Also, it makes a difference if the Place is a “standard” Place (eg country, state, or county-level place added by iNat) or not. https://www.inaturalist.org/places/penang is standard place, but https://www.inaturalist.org/places/132185 is not.

What are some URLs of these observations?

Thank you for the correction. Here are the observations mentioned: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?nelat=8.342317355238192&nelng=105.59522455169457&project_id=butterflies-of-borneo&swlat=2.394690211360275&swlng=99.44288080169457&verifiable=any

Thank you everyone!

If I were to cite an example… the observation is in Penang… but because the radius of the observation is perhaps 100000km, and hence too big to fit in Penang… these observations do not count as being in Penang, hence excluding it would be meaningless?…

Okay that’s acceptable but there is absolutely no work around this other than picking my states correctly?

I ask because sometimes the country geo polygon is more accurate than the state ones (which sometimes exclude satellite islands which belong to the state).

Hello!

While I understand (after the informative replies of thread were made) that this is “not a bug”.

Wouldn’t you agree that the human experience intuitively expects observations in Penang (even if technically it is not due to the radius being too big as discussed in the thread) …. To be included or excluded when searching/excluding penang?
