Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):
When in identification mode, if you go to the filters and choose Place and then enter “Charlotte” and then click on “Charlotte County, US, FL COUNTY” the displayed place name changes to “2021 賞蝶識花山行健 第六期第一組”. The actual filtering appears to be correct, but for some reason Charlotte County is mapping to this Chinese name.
Weirdly this does not happen if you are just filtering observations normally, it appears to only occur when you are specifically in the identification panel/filter.
didn’t test to see if it’s still an existing problem, but it looks like – at least in the past – place “slugs” don’t get created properly when the name of the place starts with a number but doesn’t have any subsequent Latin characters. you end up with a place that has a slug that is a number – at least in this case: https://api.inaturalist.org/v1/places/167007. and the system is confusing a place with a true place id 2021 and a place with a slug 2021.
i’m not sure how many additional places are affected by this sort of problem, but it looks like there are at least 4 places with the same name, which probably isn’t a good thing. 3 out of 4 of these probably need to go away: https://www.inaturalist.org/search?q=2021%20賞蝶識花山行健%20第六期第一組.
Just a heads-up that you can go directly to the Identify page (inaturalist.org/observations/identify, it’s in the header menu) and use the Place filter at the top if you want to ID observations in an iNaturalist Place. You don’t need to go to the Explore page first. The Identify page uses Place here, not Location.
