Places - How to add a name to a new place

This is my first entry to the forum so I’m not sure if this question is in the correct location.
I have successfully created a place (boundary of a provincial natural area in Canada. While I can search and see the boundary on the map, there is no name within the boundary identifying the location. Is there a way to do this? Thank you!

welcome to the forum

Can you clarify exactly how you created this place. Did you import a KML at https://www.inaturalist.org/places/new. Or did you simply use the bounding box or circle tool to draw a shape on the map whilst in the Explore screen? In the case of the latter, you can’t associate a name with those boundaries as they’re temporary and only persist in that browsing session

i assume you’re talking about the Wilson Creek (PNT) place:

although you can see the place name shows up in the left side of the gray area above the Explore map, the only place you see place labels within maps are in the baselayer, supplied by either Google or OpenStreetMap in the website, Google in the Android app, and Apple in the iOS app. in other words, if you want to see a label in the baselayer, you need to add the place to those providers. (or if you add to just OSM, Google will eventually ingest the OSM place into Google, too. i’m not sure Apple will eventually ingest from OSM.)

here’s an example of the Wilson Creek Natural Area (immediately to the west of your place) in OSM: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/430209716#map=15/52.76709/-114.54822. you can look at how that is set up and either edit that boundary or add a new place in OSM.

note that AB Parks doesn’t have your place mapped as one of their parks: https://www.albertaparks.ca/parks/central/wilson-creek-na. so I assume your place is either operated by another organization or will be added later.

The boundary box was created in Google Maps, exported as a KML file and add to New Places in iNaturalist.

Thank you for your information and suggestions. As I understand Alberta protected areas, Natural Areas as designated by Order-in-Council. "Several Natural Areas have not been designated by an order-in-council but have either a Protective Notation (PNT; 100 sites) or Consultative Notation (CNT; 6 sites) on the lands. * PNTs, or reservations, are placed by public agencies in consultation with the public land manager. They identify land and resources that are managed to achieve particular land use or conservation objectives.*
Meanwhile, I’ll try some of your suggestions for adding a label. Thank you for your reply!

Is there a way to add a text within the boundary? In the case of Wilson Creek Natural Area, it’s clearly labeled on iNaturalist. I want to do the same and have text within the Wilson Creek (NPT) boundary (in orange)

so it looks like you’ve created the place in OSM. it may take some time for the OSM map tiles to regenerate to include both your place boundaries and name labels. it looks like the boundary and/or name label has already been added to some zoom levels but not others. so i would just give it more time.

as for when the changes will be reflected in the Google tiles, i’m not sure what their schedule is for ingesting OSM changes. i would just wait, but you can also go to Google and specifically request to add the place, and that might speed things up (maybe?). i’m not sure about the Apple process.
