This might have been asked before (apologies for that), but I don’t seem to be able to figure it out…
I made a project to group all observations in a small specific area in Swellendam (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/swellendam-silcrete-fynbos). Yesterday I uploaded 8 or so observations, of which 4 I got included in the project, but the others not. Why would this be? The 4 do have 2 or 3 ID’s (the others none), could this be the problem?
Second, when people join the project, ALL of their observations appear and seem to be part of the group, which is not to case. How do I prevent this? I don’t see any filters in the project setting that I can change.
We want to organize an BioBlitz like event soon, so I want to make sure everything is running optimally and before people start uploading and we have to re-do.
If I try to batch edit those four that our not included and try to add them to the project I get this message “None of those observations could be added to the project “Swellendam Silcrete Fynbos”: collection and umbrella projects do not allow direct submission”
Regarding 2. I was thinking about the location, but it seems that if one does not have a certain amount of observations, one cannot add a location? Or is this different for polygons? Adding a polygon would certainly help.
When thebeachcomber says polygon, that is a place (a place can be composed of one or multiple polygons). Yes, you need to have created 50 verifiable observations in order to add a place to iNaturalist: https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000175019-how-to-make-a-place-on-inaturalist It is highly recommended to spend some more time adding observations to iNaturalist before running an iNaturalist project or event.
Observations cannot be manually added to collection projects like yours. They simply appear in the project if they meet the requirements.
the key thing to note here is that this requires someone to have manually annotated each and every taxon as native in a particular iNat checklist, which is not the case for the large majority of taxa around the world (introduced species are far more often manually annotated as such for any given location, and then there’s the general implicit assumption that anything unannotated is native)
Did you not want to include observations of introduced taxa in your project?
I changed from ‘native’ to ‘all’ and now it works. Some of the taxa have not been ID so it’s currently just the genus or family, which I guess can be either native or introduced. I assume that is why.
Regarding the place, I’ve made a KML and one of the people part of the project with more observations will add it - hope it works now!
