Description of problem** (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):

Step 1: Go https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/chequamegon-bay-area. This is the landing page for the Chequamegon Bay Area project.

Step 2: Click the “View All” button on that page. This will take you to a list of the 64,380 observations made by 4212+ observers with identifications by 4140+ identifiers.

Step 3: Click any observation. For example, click on the observation “Common Gilled Mushrooms and Allies” made by @maskarsaplants on July 30, 2024 at 1:35 PM CDT.

Step 4: Examine the page for the observation mentioned in Step 3.

Step 5: In the “Projects” section for the page, note that the project “Chequamegon Bay Area” is not shown.

Step 6: Look at recent observations of birds in this project. Note that the collection project “Birds of America” are not shown for recent observations.

Step 7: Look at older observations of birds collected in this project Both the “Chequamegon Bay Area” and “Birds of America” projects are shown,

Comment: It looks to me as if somewhere along the line, observations from this and perhaps other areas quit showing the projects applicable to the observation. iNaturalist is adding the observations to the projects and showing them on the project list but is not displaying them on the individual observation pagers where users can see them.

Users only get a project icon on observations that are included in projects they’ve joined. If they haven’t joined your collection project, then there won’t be an icon on their observations even if they are included in your project.

My issue does not relate to what other users are or aren’t able to see. My issue is with what I am not able to see…

I am the creator, project administrator and member of the Chequamegon Bay Area project. It’s a collection project collecting all observations within a custom-defined area.

When I look at individual observations in this project made recently by observers other than myself, project names - including Chequamegon Bay Area and other projects of which I am a member - do not appear. When I look at older observations in the same project made by people other than myself, project names sometimes appear and sometimes. The names of projects I have not joined sometimes appear in observations made by others. So my post was made due to my perception that there is inconsistency in the manner in which project names are displayed. Perhaps there is a reason for the differences.

In any event, I can see in the observations of other observers the names of projects I have not joined. But I cannot see the names of the project Chequamegon Bay Area that I administer.

I think I misunderstood your reply. I think I understand now. If they have not joined the project, when I look at the observation the project name will not display. If they have joined the project, the project name will display. I will test this on the two projects I administer.

Thanks for the explanation!

I’ve wondered about this, too. Now it makes sense, thanks.

Is there a way to know which of your observations are included in project(s) that you have not joined?

I don’t think there’s a way to know all projects that have included your observations, but if you go to a specific project, you should be able to use the search filters to look through its observations for anything of yours.
