Published papers that use iNaturalist data - wiki 5 (2026 and 2027)

This is a fifth wiki providing a user-curated list of scientific publications that use iNaturalist data, covering the years 2026 and 2027. For previous wikis see:

Publications in 2010–2019
Publications in 2020–2021
Publications in 2022–2023
Publications in 2024–2025

Please add relevant publications, including, where possible (1) a link to the paper itself, (2) a link to the observation filter that encompasses as closely as possible what was used by the paper, and (3) contact details for the author(s) in cases where the paper is not open access. There is no need to additionally comment that you have added a paper.

Articles are organised in alphabetical order by first author. These multiple wikis have been created, rather than just one, because of word limits for a single post.

These wikis are intended to complement the list of 5000+ journal articles that cite GBIF data including iNaturalist exports (summary of citations of all kinds here) so papers already on that list need not be included here.

Not a paper but the link to 2024-2025 doesn’t use a dash but instead a hyphen which is so unsatisfying lol

it’s a wiki - anyone can edit the post.

Added a new paper by Otto et al that relied extensively on iNat data to find new populations of a rare bumblebee. Please let me know if I added the citation correctly :-)

Heteropteron 77: https://www.heteropteron.de/downloads/hetero-77.pdf

There are several iNat references here. I am linking the document here so that it doesn’t get forgotten.

Added this, it is new from May about the success of ID apps for vascular plants.

This is my first post. How do I edit the list? to add: Engel, L.D., Smith, A., Cardenas, I. et al. The impact of non-native trees on galling and herbivory in New York City across space and time. Oecologia 208, 127 (2026). https://doi.org/10.1007/s00442-026-05951-0
