Hello.
A really simple question.
On the website, which category(ies) are invertebrates other than insects and arachnids grouped together (I’m thinking in particular of millipedes, crustaceans, worms, etc.)?
Hello.
A really simple question.
On the website, which category(ies) are invertebrates other than insects and arachnids grouped together (I’m thinking in particular of millipedes, crustaceans, worms, etc.)?
Did you already look at this page?
https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1-Animalia
And there are the arthropods:
https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/47120-Arthropoda
Just move down the different ranks.
I see. Seem to be the most commonly observed groups. With the others you have to use the normal search box to find the taxon you are interested in.
Yes, those broad categories (also known as “iconic taxa” if you want to search for more info) are limited to a few common groups. Everything not in those select groups winds up under the “unknown” category (the grey leaf with question mark) in searches. There are a couple (rather old) feature requests to expand the list:
https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/make-crustaceans-and-myriapods-iconic-taxa/996
https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/create-iconic-taxa-for-bacteria-archaea-and-viruses/1464
in the system, these are included in the “other animals” iconic taxon group. there’s some relevant discussion here: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/add-additional-taxa-category-buttons-in-the-filter-menu-to-include-taxa-not-in-any-other-category/63293.
if you wanted to filter via the URL, you would use the parameter iconic_taxa=Animalia
.
This is exactly what I’m talking about.
so i believe the request is asking for the additional 2 iconic taxa to be added to the filters in the web Explore and Identify screens.
Generally, I was asking how to get all arthropods and other invertebrates other than insects and arachnids into the filters.
You could use the &without_taxon_id
url parameter to exclude insects (47158), arachnids (47119) and vertebrates (2) from the animals (1), like this:
I think that gets close to what you want, but it does still include observations with IDs that exactly match higher-level taxa that contain the excluded groups. So an observation of a spider with an ID of Subphylum Chelicerata would still match, because that taxon includes a few classes other than Class Arachnida.
