Add additional taxa category buttons in the filter menu to include taxa not in any other category

Platform(s): Website

Description of need: Filtering searches for iconic groups of taxa can be done with a simple click of the button when you’re searching for birds, plants, insects, etc. However, several taxonomic groups are not included in any of these categories. This makes it far more difficult to find observations of them as it would require manipulating the URL, which not every user knows how to do. These include springtails, bryozoans, arthropods excluding insects and arachnids, etc

Feature request details: Alongside the category buttons in the observation filters, at least one more button should be added that encapsulates these organisms, even if it’s just an “other” button. This would prevent confusion among users in cases such as this.

Thank you! :)

i think this request needs to be clarified a bit. taxa in iNat are already categorized into 14 “iconic taxa”. in some parts of the system, you can find all 14 iconic taxa represented, such as in the Edit Observations screen. however, in the web versions of the Explore and Identify screens, only 12 of the 14 iconic taxa are included in the filters. (“other animals” and chromista are missing.) so i believe the request is asking for the additional 2 iconic taxa to be added to the filters in the web Explore and Identify screens. (i don’t think this request is asking for additional iconic taxa beyond the ones that already exist or otherwise changing the ones that already exist. reorganizing or additing new iconic taxa is covered in another request: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/make-crustaceans-and-myriapods-iconic-taxa/996 .)

I don’t see why you would have to edit the URL to find these species. You can just type the taxonomic group you’re interested in into the ‘Species’ search bar. Here are links to example searches for springtails and bryozoans.

‘Arthropods excluding insects and arachnids’ isn’t really a taxonomic group, so you’d have to break it down further to search for that.

Where were you able to see this? I had no idea these other two already existed!

Yes, that sounds correct! Thank you for clarifying! :)
