Retrieving observations in random order

I’m at a nature preserve and I want to use the “places/guide-widget” on our web site to show all the observed members of some family - e.g., reptiles - on a page, so people can learn to identify them. I’d like to get the list in random order, but I can’t seem to get order_by= or order= tags to work on the widget or on an explore url. Is there some way I can get the species in random order (just so it isn’t the same every time)?
