I am a part of a group doing monthly amphibian surveys. We have several teams that go out and make observations. It is quite a diverse group of people. Some have androids and some have iPhones. Our lead person collects observations (pics of eggs, larvae and mature individuals and pics of data sheets) on a google drive and since I am retired and have most free time, I check data consistency and enter into iNaturalist. There are times when I have close to 40 observations per month, half of them from iPhones. With that volume of data it is most convenient to do it on my laptop (Windows). Most of my iPhone users are not that tech savvy to toggle between HEIC/HEIF and JPG formats and I end up having to convert their data. I need to preserve the metadata - entering by hand 20 (x2) coordinates with 5 significant digits and 20 timestamps every month would drive me insane and is error prone. I found a Photopea app that lets me do the conversion and keep the metadata. I still need to figure out how to do many pics at once, but it’s an improvement. I read through this thread and it seems to me that there is a patent/proprietary issue with the format on non- apple platforms? Is it still so? Then at least does anybody know how to do a batch conversion with Photopea or is there another way?
