I’m not an iPhone user but I am supporting folks who are. Does Next support tags and observation fields?
It doesn’t support observation fields.
“Tags” gets used in a few different ways by iNatters - can you be more specific here?
Short version - Can someone add a tag to an observation on Next?
Long version - I am encouraging people who upload observations of aquatic macroinvertebrates as part of the MacroBlitz project to tag those observations as MacroBlitz. This keeps all observations made during a MacroBlitz in the MacroBlitz “ecosystem” regardless of whether or not the ID meets project requirements. The tag allows others in the project to easily find those observations intended for MacroBlitz and to move them along the taxonomic continuum. Can tagging be done via the app?
if it’s helpful at all, I would actually enjoy trying to make a browser based app that would filter based on tag / observation field. the app could be a link in the “about” on the inat project.
It could be helpful. It might get more folks to start using the tag, too.
Obviously not an app, but lets newbs see their data (after entering the OBS fields) and allows them to sort more easily based on species / OBS field. This link could be added to the project “about” or a journal post…

Borrows heavily from pisum’s scripts, and what I don’t know is… does the ease of filtration cause performance concerns because the user isn’t required to mess around with url params and/or the more feature rich filtration in the default iNat UI.
- might coax them off of the phone and onto a computer
A lot of people use the term “tag” when they really mean “mention” (aka @-mentioning someone). I assume by “tag” you mean tagging an observation, correct? Like this? https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/269739991
If so, then the answer is no.
Correct, I meant tag an observation, and not @ a user.
Uhm… maybe?
And thank you! This is awesome. MUCH appreciated.
so like, just as an example… if you pull up this project in Next on your phone. There is a link in the project “about” labled “plants being visited by insects”. It’s an out-link to a browser based “app” that is displaying a list of plants that could be filtered by “tag”. In my case, it allows a plant to be chosen and shows the visitors to that plant (using a specific observation field required by the project). In your case, the link might say “observations tagged with macroblitz that need further ID before fitting into the project”. I realize this doesn’t do what you’re asking… let them tag an OBS from next, but it might make them interested in signing on from the computer and adding the tag so their observations show up in the list at the link in the “about”. Hope this all makes sense.
I think it’s probably unrealistic for iNat to provide custom logic for all the different scenarios made possible by user defined OBS fields and tags. This logic is sooo important and yet they are somewhat sidelined. This must feel to them like watching as less savvy decorators affix the star on top of a christmas tree they’ve decorated. They must worry that we’ll stumble and knock over the tree, or that by affixing the star it will appear that we (and not they) did all the decorating. Luckily, they’re pretty kind and understanding.
Hopefully I’m not doing anything too dumb. I want my epitaph to read “he tried real hard and wasn’t a complete fool (he was an incomplete one)”.
