Website Slowdown: Taxon Suggestions and Images Loading Slowly

Hello,

Since the first week of January, I’ve noticed a significant slowdown on the iNaturalist website, particularly when loading taxon suggestions while identifying observations. Additionally, the images in the list of taxa suggestions are taking an unusually long time to load.

I’m wondering if this issue is specific to my browser or internet connection, or if others are experiencing similar slowdowns.

For reference, I’m using the latest Chrome version on Windows 10.

Is this a known issue, or are there any recommended troubleshooting steps?

Thank you!

Ditto, especially waiting for the dashboard to load on Safari (iPhone) and annotations to save on chrome (windows 11).

Here in South Africa I have noticed this since about 25 December. I thought that it was maybe a local problem but other websites load as before. I have been finding iNat very tedious and slow in all respects. A few photos taken early in the morning take me until midday to load. Granted I am on an old MacBook Pro.

I’ve been seeing the same thing on Microsoft Edge on Windows 11, especially with the dashboard.

Oh good, so it not just me… just moved back to Germany and thought “wow, Germany really IS bad when it comes to digitalisation compared to my South American homes of the past few years” (well, still is true actually)

Mobile with Chrome

I’ve noticed this too and I’m from the UK. It makes identifying things slow because I’m waiting longer than usual for it to add my identifications.

Same, got a few troubles with identifying because of this (France, Windows, Firefox)

Same in Spain, I can really recall when it started. Either at PC with Chrome browser, or on Safari/Chrome at iPhone.

my internet is super slow, so i cant blame

in my experience, loading and uploading pictures and taxa is way slower on the app, slow death slow

but the map loads faster in the app… while on my computer takes ages. the search is also super slow. like is faster to use my super slow cellphone to search for something than in my pc.

make it make sense?

anyway, my internet is slow for real.

but even when my internet is working fine, and i can use youtube, and other apps… even then sometimes inat wont load correctly on the app… it will take a whole day or more to upload an observation. no matter how big or small.

How are things feeling now? We made some updates that should improve things. The website seems about the same speed for me as usual.

The speed seems to be normal. But the thumbnail images for the list of taxa suggestions are still not loading.

Those are coming directly from Amazon Web Services (AWS), so what’s more likely is an issue between AWS and you (perhaps via your internet service provider?) than an issue with iNat itself. Hard to say, though.

Hi tiwane. I’m in South Africa and on the website. I restarted everything this morning and managed to load an observation. However when I tried to open the observation to do the annotations it just loaded endlessly. Similarly when I get an ID notification and try to open my observation to check it, it just loads without end. I’m not a computer boffin, just a dummy user and I’m at the end of my tether. I do not know what to try further. Other websites load as normal and I’m currently streaming Classic FM from the UK without an issue.

Also South Africa
Website - Chrome - Windows 10.
Uploaded a few obs yesterday, without problems.

Just a heads-up that I’m in touch with doug via our help system. I suspect it’s a browser or local issue.
