What's up with Computer ID Suggestions in Identify Mode?

In the IDENTIFY Mode, the computer model is suggesting 500 ID options for an observation. If the observation is obviously an insect, it may suggest all sorts of ID options from plants to just about anything? It should at least be able to get things in the right Kingdom. Why is it giving so many options with so many being obviously not even close?

There is no CV on in the Identify mode. You are supposed to identify on you own. I never use the suggestions tab, it is pretty useless and is not meant to be the same CV suggestion as when the full observation view or when uploading in the app.

Did you start with your ‘obvious’ ID of insect?

That depends on what settings you use. This sounds like you’ve got it set to show Observations (which is what I mostly use myself, but not always), but if you choose ‘Visually similar’ it should show up to ten CV suggestions based on the current ID (so within the genus for a genus or species-level ID, within the family for family level, etc.). If the observation has no ID, it will guess from any kingdom but you can also choose whatever level you want it to look at in a way you can’t in the individual observation pages.

I always use “visually similar” and I often change the taxon it is making suggestions in, which you can do by clicking on Taxon.
Because it will by default make suggestions in the genus the first identifier has used, and this is sometimes wrong, I often choose a higher taxon such as class or family. (This is also very helpful if there are look-alike species that I don’t know about, or have forgotten.)
