Where does the data for species in the place check lists come from?

Hi, sorry if this has already been answered somewhere else, but I’ve got a question about the place check lists. The check list pages have a # species observed out of # overall species observed on the page, like this

If some of the species have not been observed yet on iNaturalist, how do we know that they are in the area? Where does that data come from? Is it just crowdsourced or is it referencing some other bigger resource?

Thanks!!! First time posting here, so if I did something incorrect, please let me know.

They probably first uploaded a list from somewhere, but you can also manually add species. I sometimes check Kew’s Plants of the World Online range maps and will add a species of interest to a country list if it’s supposed to be found there but not already on their list.

In my project area I uploaded the most comprehensive species list that I could assemble from a variety of sources to create it.
