I was recently looking through my photos on inaturalist and discovered that around 95% of my research grade observations were featured on GBIF why is this.
Here are some examples.
You will it if you scroll down to the Data Quality Assessment and look to the right.

Because RG observations, provided they are associated with a CC0, CC BY, or CC-BY NC license, are exported to GBIF
https://www.gbif.org/what-is-gbif
Seems like a pretty good cause. And if you look under “reference” on GBIF, it links right back to your observation. They aren’t using your photo for anything, they’re basically just saying “here’s an INaturalist entry”.
GBIF combines occurrence records from natural history collections and now iNaturalist. Also worth noting that GBIF is a supporter of iNaturalist https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/partners
It’s more of a “in what situations does GBIF not use your photos?”
Exporting them to GBIF is a default setting, depending on how you’ve set your licenses. You can adjust it so that it’s just you observation that is exported, that it’s the observation and the photo, that it’s the photo, but not the observation, and more.
So allow me to ask: why isn’t this observation on GBIF?
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/78053657
It’s associated with a CC-BY NC license…
I think this observation is too recent to be on GBIF - uploads occur every few weeks.
The possibility of having my records on GBIF is personally one of my favourite aspects of using iNaturalist because it’s where its citizen science component feels the most directly impactful.
thanks
Does that make you feel good about your observations since its being used for data?
kinda
