WinkleWatch: A Community Science Project on Snail Colour

There is a new citizen science project studying color variation in the periwinkle snail Littorina saxatilis. These snails are native to both coasts of the North Atlantic, and they have been introduced to the San Francisco Bay as well. The project is not affiliated with iNaturalist, so I thought I would post it here in case anyone wants to contribute. You can even fill out the form if you already have observations of the species, but it doesn’t look like they have a date field so maybe that would be helpful to clarify somewhere.

Thanks so much, Thomas! It’s great to see citizen science, wherever it unfolds!

I took a quick look at the periwinkle project, and I noticed a few things:

  1. The word ‘Research’ is misspelled as ‘reasearch’ near the bottom of the “WinkleWatch” page — just a small typo!
  2. That’s a big and impressive team!
  3. I’m curious — do you know why this fantastic project isn’t integrated with iNaturalist?

Looking forward to hearing more! :snail:

I asked, and they said the info they were looking for would be a bit cumbersome to include as project requirements. But I think it could have worked out.
