About tab for Audubon's Crested Caracara is broken

Here: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/720455-Caracara-cheriway-audubonii. Clicking on the ‘About’ tab causes the whale of doom to show up.

Manually disabling a link to Wikipedia prevents the whaleshark, but it definitely shouldn’t have a whaleshark regardless, so I’m leaving it as-is for now until someone else can take a look.

I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the Wikipedia page is a redirect to another species?

As far as I know (I haven’t looked at the code), iNat only uses the scientific name when trying to match to Wikipedia articles. If a scientific name is a redirect on Wikipedia, the About tab on iNat will automatically show the article that it is being redirected to on Wikipedia.

Same issue was reported here: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/taxon-page-i-ate-inaturalist-and-other-issues-for-those-lacking-a-wikipedia-article/3736 but not sure what was fixed in that case.

if you switch languages (say, French or Spanish), the About section shows up fine and even seems to pull in Wikipedia information from an automatically redirected species-level page. i wonder how the redirect from subspecies to species is achieved in these other languages? (i wonder what would happen if “Tres Marias Crested Caracara” was redirected to “Northern Crested Caracara” in WIkipedia?)

(i was also comparing with Krider’s hawk, which seems to be set up similarly in iNat and Wikipedia, except that it has 2 English common names in iNat. that one seems to behave more in line with expectations.)

The page is working now! :)

Not for me; it’s still showing the whale of doom.

I’m still getting the fail whale too…

This is showing info from EOL now, and no whale shark, so I’ll close this report.
