Add Kalaallisut/Greenlandic Language to iNaturalist Platform

Hello everyone,

I wanted to follow up on a language request I have already submitted via Crowdin to ask for the addition of Greenlandic (Kalaallisut) to iNaturalist.

I am currently involved in the project “Plastics & Wildlife in the Arctic, Sub‑Arctic and Northern Europe.” In Arctic contexts, language can be a real barrier to participation, especially for local observers, community members, and field collaborators who may not feel comfortable using English. Kalaallisut is widely used in Greenland and is an important language for engaging people who live and work directly in Arctic environments.

Adding Kalaallisut/Greenlandic language would help (even partially):

  • Lower barriers to uploading observations

  • Encourage broader local participation

  • Support more inclusive and representative data collection in Arctic regions

I am happy to help with translations and review, and I am committed to contributing actively if the language is added.

Thank you very much for considering this request, and for all the work that goes into making iNaturalist accessible to diverse communities.

Best regards,
Diana Matos

Our diversity of human languages is also an important part of biodiversity. We are losing human languages too.

I would suggest submitting a ticket on iNaturalist Help:

https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/tickets/new

That will go to staff and they can respond there, but I believe they are the only ones able to add languages.

NB: Greenlandic is a lexicon for names on iNat, so it already exists there and relevant taxon names can be added.
