Description of problem: The popup asking if you want to disagree (screenshotted above) does not show up if you are using the “identify” window.
This seems to only happen on some observations
Edit: it seem to happen every time, happened here too https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/166738133
Edit2: On this last obs the community taxon has changed since I tried to ID it, so it no longer should be used for testing
If there are multiple people adding different IDs, sometimes if you disagree with say the original identifier, but the community ID is now pretty broad and your ID is a subcategory of that community ID, you don’t get asked if you disagree.
These were cases where no one had yet disagreed with the original species level ID, I added a broader ID in the identify window, and it did not ask me if I disagreed, and then I deleted that ID and started over in a non-identify window on the same observation, and made the same ID, and then it did ask me if I disagree.
Now that you mention it, I think I’ve occasionally had that happen to me too, and as you said, deleting the ID and trying again then gets you the option to disagree. It seems to happen kind of randomly. Mysterious.
I trip over asking someone to withdraw their broad ID to Plantae - then I have to make sure that their intended disagreement ‘not that sp’ is still recognised by iNat. By adding an appropriate disagreeing taxon ID - or iNat graciously reverts to Needs ID at the wrong sp. CID algorithm logic is a tug of war. You can win, but you have to pull.
I’m not sure if I understand your problem correctly as your screenshot isn’t of the identify page…
From what I’ve understood and seen, the disagreement will only show if you pick something at a similar taxon level (for example the observer has a species picked and you pick a different one). If you pick something (from the Identify page using the suggestion tab) at a higher taxon level that encompasses the choice of the observer it won’t disagree automatically or have the window pop-up. If you want to do this in the Identify page you have to make sure you input your choice manually while in the “Info tab”, that’s when the pop-up will show.
That’s what I’ve noticed since I joined iNat, don’t know if it was different before.
I’m no expert but maybe there is something particular to your situation that causes this. I hope this doesn’t happen again to you but if it does, hopefully you’ll be able to get a screenshot of the “aftermath” (more to show the time of ID and the specific observation so it’s a precise example). I’m just thinking some of the staff might be able to look up the particulars that way rather than staying very broad.
