Hi, I just joined Habitat Haven, Coast to Coast Cascade Bird Alliance but I’m not able to add posts to the project. I’m assuming it’s a “collection” project since I can’t add but my posts aren’t meeting the criteria? I created a place per the admin instructions, but the place (mine is “hh 51st place”) is not showing up for me as an option to add to my observations when I search it. I added the place days ago. What am I missing?
you don’t add a place to the observation. you specify a location via coordinates + accuracy, and you optionally have the ability to add a location description, but that description is just label for humans and does not affect where the observation is shown on a map nor which places encompass the observation.
in your case, your last observation has lat / long coordinates that fall within the boundaries of your place, but the accuracy extends out of the bounding box of your place. so that means that your observation will not be interpreted by the system as being in your place.
there’s some additional information here:
i’ve been leaving it obscured when it’s not related to the project and trying to remember to tag to the relevant address and have a bunch of observations where the address is specific/correct enough that it sounds like it should show up in the project, but no posts have so far? you’re right that i’m inconsistent still but what i’m asking about is why the posts that i correctly assign the exact address to within the field still aren’t show up here https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?project_id=habitat-haven-coast-to-cascades-bird-alliance&place_id=any&verifiable=any
it sounds like you’re you’re assigning a location by searching for and selecting an address, and if i’m understanding your correctly, then what happens when you select a location this way is that that address that you enter gets translated to coordinates + accuracy value. if you want to make sure your observation gets included in your place of interest, you need to make sure the coordinates and accuracy value actually fall within that place. right now, as i noted in my earlier reply, you have observations where the coordinates fall within in the place but the accuracy circle extends beyond the bounding box of the place. below is a visualization of that, in case it makes it clearer. the coordinates of your observation are represented by the central dot. your place of interest is represented by the small orange polygon. the large red circle represents the accuracy value of your location, and you can see it extends well beyond your place’s boundary.
if you think you have a particular observation that isn’t one of these cases that i’m talking about, then please specify which observation you think should be in your place.
