Android app: Annotation fields missing

Please fill out the following sections to the best of your ability, it will help us investigate bugs if we have this information at the outset. Screenshots are especially helpful, so please provide those if you can.

Platform (Android, iOS, Website):

Browser, if a website issue (Firefox, Chrome, etc) :

Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):

When viewing observations, either through Explore or through My Observations, options to add annotations are sometimes, and not always, missing.

  • Sometimes the only field available is Sex.

  • Sometimes a field is missing options which should be there (e.g. a fly only has Life Stage options of “Adult” and “Egg” even though “Larva” and “Pupa” are visible on the website).

  • Sometimes a field is visible but shows no options when clicked (e.g. I click “select” under “plant phenology” and the Plant Phenology header appears with none of the options available, just a header and a blank box)

  • Sometimes the full list appears briefly when an observation is loaded, but quickly disappears, leaving only the Sex option.

  • This doesn’t happen consistently. Even within the same session of using the app, some observations appear affected while others don’t.

  • The effect doesn’t seem persistent long-term: observations which were not displaying correctly yesterday might be fine today, and ones which were fine yesterday might have errors today, but refreshing or restarting the app doesn’t see to affect this.

  • This also occurs when filters are used within Explore (e.g. only observations from 2021; only plants; even annotations!)

  • I can get this issue by clicking on an observation or by swiping right/left between observations.

Steps:

  1. Launch the app.

  2. Go to Explore OR to My Observations.

  3. Click on an observation OR swipe from another observation and scroll down to its Annotations pane.

That’s it.

i can’t reproduce this using the same version of the Android app (on Pixel 3a), looking at your observations or mine, clicking to the observation or swiping to the next.

The next time this happens, please send screenshots and log files to help@inaturalist.org. To send log files, go to the About tab in the app and tap three times on the version number. You will then have the option to email the log files to us. That should give us a clue into what the app is doing.

Will do, thank you!

I am interested on this issue. I will try do it also. It happened also to me from time to time for other projects

I’m experiencing the same issue, exactly as described.

Platform:
Android

App version number:
1.26.9 (539)

(I just emailed a video screencapture of the issue along with debug logs to help@inaturalist.org.)

Since a few days ago (when I started trying to systematically add annotations to local observations), this bug has seemed to affect anywhere from 1/8th to 1/2 of all observations. I have a vague recollection that the bug may have been around for much longer than that (several months?), but I wasn’t as active about annotating back then so I’m not sure…

Thanks! Made an issue on GitHub: https://github.com/inaturalist/iNaturalistAndroid/issues/1196

This has been an issue I’ve observed (across multiple iNat versions & android versions) since 2019
https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/annotation-fields-not-always-present-in-app/8243

I’m having this exact issue as well. Has been going on for quite some time, through various versions of the app.

Samsung Galaxy S10e
Android 11
iNaturalist app v. 1.26.9 (539)

I’ve had this issue intermittently. It used to be fixed on a good internet connection, but as of a few days ago that doesn’t seem to work. All my observations will only display the choices listed in previous posts. Another new issue is that all fields will be visible, but almost instantaneously they disappear and just sex is left. The observation fields here were filled out on desktop.

Browser, if a website issue (Firefox, Chrome, etc) :

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages:
This observation works just fine https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/116484839
This one does not, same species and same observer

Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):

Step 1: Go to first link.

Step 2: Select life stage, larva is available for selection.

Step 3: Go to second link.

Step 4: Select life stage, only adult and egg are available.

Both show all 4 stages for me now

Maybe the same as this bug.

Thats happened to me several times where I can’t annotate a picture of a caterpillar properly because “Larva” and “Pupa” are missing.

One more Android user said she has only Egg and Adult for Life Stage:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/120485881
She was able to remove the annotation so I could set the correct one.

The issue with only a subset of annotations selectable happens very frequently to me (Android user). But lately also saw the case with no options at all, as described above, so it is still a thing

What are you observing? I see that when there are no options, such as a moss.

Flowering Plant

I noticed the same issue today.

2 observations that I uploaded yesterday, a beetle & a spiny lizard, only had options for adult & egg. There should have been a larva option for the beetle and a juvenile option for the lizard.

On the other hand, I uploaded a different lizard species (green anole) today, and it had all 3 life stages.
