"checklist places" source

What is the source of the information that is used to create “checklist places”
At times there are outliers that are far from the range and observations shown.

The sources can vary. Can you provide an example?

At the bottom of a checklist sometimes the source in mentioned.

As you zoom in some countries in S. America are orange, if you zoom in further these change and Wisconsin is orange. Zoom in further and counties in Texas and other states appear orange, but Wisconsin does not.

For South America and Wisconsin, the presence of research grade observations in those places caused the species to be added to those place checklists, but they do not get automatically removed if the observations are later reidentified as a different species. I didn’t go through all the out-of-range Texas counties, but probably mostly the same situation.

There is a feature for taxa called an atlas that is meant to help prevent this from happening. According to some old documentation (https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/atlases): “Active atlases prevent the automatic creation of listed taxa from Research Grade observations or the automatic creation of listed taxa on ancestor places resulting from the manual creation of listed taxa on descendant places.” but unfortunately that’s not the case.
