[not sure this really belongs to bug reports]

There are a number of seemingly identical places, most of them with slightly different species checklists. Their name is often identical and it is not obvious which of the two is used for atlas purposes.

Example:
Loir-Et-Cher, Centre, FR
(1) https://www.inaturalist.org/places/loir-et-cher-centre-fra (1451 of 1580 observed)
(2) https://www.inaturalist.org/places/loir-et-cher (1460 of 1575 observed)

I found a dozen or more just browsing the districts within France. Can they be merged, please? Or, at least named in a way to make clear, which one will be relevant to the atlas. Thank you.

Moved to general since the system seems to be working as intended in this case (at least as far as I can tell), though I definitely think it’s fair to discuss this issue and how the system could work better.

If you flag them, curators can take a look and possibly merge them.

However, any associated projects with the “input” place will have that place removed from the project requirements. It’s best to contact the project admins first to get that changed.

Also, this sometimes happens because the standard place boundaries are wrong. We use GADM boundaries, so they should be fixed there first. In the meantime sometimes people create a community curated version of the incorrect standard place. In that case, they can’t be merged by curators (who can’t do anything with standard places).
