Profile picture cropping has shifted on iNaturalist

Unsure if this is a bug or was something intentional, but profile pic thumbnails seem to have changed on iNat

Here is my full pic:

Here is what it looks like on the forum, cropped as a thumbnail, which is what it also looked like on iNat itself:

But as of this morning, here is what it now looks like on iNat:

I noticed the same thing, but only on profile page.

I’ve seen this before I think. On mobile, in the “Observers” section of an Explore search if I remember correctly, the profile picture is zoomed in behind the crop. A little annoying bug, maybe it’s spreading?

My moon moves depending on where you’re looking at it. On observations and the forum, it’s on the left:

But on the home page and top bar, it’s almost centred:

It’s a 4:3 image I couldn’t be bothered to crop, so I suspect the first is taking a square from the centre, and the second is taking a square from the left edge?

My profile image has a weird double overlay, but only on the home pages and top bar:

I would guess it’s a result of https://github.com/inaturalist/inaturalist/pull/4348

Yeeks! My face has been removed from this new centering as well – it’s just edge of a finger now. :)

That’s kind of trippy…
The profile pics on the left are from some observation comments as they show on my Home screen, and the ones on the right are how the same users appear by their comments in the actual observation page. Bit of a difference!

It happened to me too! You can see my normal profile pic here on the forum. Very annoying.

Sorry about that, should be fixed now. On the plus side, profile pics should not be displaying at an unnecessarily low resolution on profile pages now.

Yes! It works now, thank you!
