Remove duplicate observation in app?

Completely new to this. I have managed to create a duplicate observation, and cannot find a way in the app to do either of these :-

  1. Remove it
  2. Add it to existing observation as secondary photo

(There is no 3 !!)

Can anyone advise please ?

Which app are you using? Android, iOS newer iNat app, or iOS with iNaturalist Classic?

Also, note that sometime the app (usually it’s Android) may display the same observation twice, so it’s not two different observations, jsut the same one shown two different times. If you delete one, you’ll delete them both.

I don’t know the app, but you can upload the observation, then edit it in the website. On the right of the edit page (which has a URL like observations/2147483648/edit), there’s a box with the photos. I think what you do is uncheck the ones you want to delete. For the results, see these three obs:

This was an oak with poison ivy growing up its side, and what I thought was a maple seedling next to it. I took four pictures, uploaded them all, combined into one observation, duplicated the observation twice, and removed some pictures.

I experianced this on the website recently when searching “your observations” by genus, both of my two observations showed up with duplicates. In hindsite I should have screenshotted it but refreshing the page resolved the issue

When you’re scrolling on the Explore page, sometimes observations do show twice. If you mouseover them, you should see that they have the same URL, which means it’s one observation being displayed twice.

If it’s the Android app, tap “Edit” (pencil icon, top right), then “Delete” (trashcan icon, bottom left). Dunno about iOS

I’m glad it’s a known issue, you are exactly right, they both had the same URL

Hi and thank you all for the replies. To clarify a couple of points :-

Using ios 18.5
This WAS my mistake, instead of grouping photos into one Observation I erroneously created a second observation. The feedback seems to suggest I cannot fix this on the app, I will have to do this on the actual website ? Would that be correct ?

  1. Tap on one of your duplicate observations
  2. Tap the pencil icon in the top right
  3. Tap the 3 dots in the top right
  4. “Delete observation”
  1. Tap the observation you want to save
  2. Tap the pencil icon
  3. Tap the + icon in the top left
  4. Choose the middle icon (photos) to select photo from your phone gallery
  5. Save the observation
