Search and sort data

Is it possible to do a data search and sort for all amphibian and reptile observations in a state constrained by time … say past 2- 3 years. I am interested in which species are most commonly reported vs under or unreported … not observed or not commonly observed.

You can do a lot of that with the filter settings on the Explore tab. For instance, the following link shows all of the reptiles observed in South Carolina from January 1, 2023 until today.

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?d1=01%2F01%2F2023&d2=2025-10-26&place_id=43&taxon_id=26036&view=species

And this image shows the summary of that.

SC_Reptiles

If you want to export that data to a spreadsheet, I’m not sure if you need some API code or if there’s a easier way to do that. Others have experience with that.

to handle both, you can use either a comma-separated list of taxa, like so: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?taxon_ids=26036,20978

… or in this particular case, you can alternatively use a comma-separated list of “iconic taxa”, like so: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?iconic_taxa=Reptilia,Amphibia

Is there a way to search and sort data so I can get a “spread sheet” with all of the amphibian and reptile observations in South Carolina for the past year, or two, sorted by number of observations per species?

I moved your post here because it seemed to be a continuation of the same original question.
Maybe you can elaborate on what you’ve done so far? Did you try some of the suggestions above?

See this Help page for exporting observation data: https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000170342-how-can-i-download-data-from-inaturalist-

There is also an API call for “species counts”, e.g. https://api.inaturalist.org/v1/observations/species_counts?place_id=43&year=2024%2C2025&iconic_taxa=Amphibia%2CReptilia&include_ancestors=false or visualized, https://jumear.github.io/stirfry/iNatAPIv1_observations_species_counts?place_id=43&iconic_taxa=Amphibia%2CReptilia&year=2024,2025 (with a csv export option, created by pisum)
