Is it possible to change the default zoom level of the map when using Explore in the app? Seeing all observations within a radius of 20-30 km is a little overwhelming. I always end up zooming in a lot. Would be better if there was a filter setting for map radius from current gps position down to just a few km.

No, it’s currently not an option in either the iOS or Android app.
Perhaps you should suggest this as a new feature. You can create a collection project for the area you’re interested in but it’s a pretty laborious process to see it as a map, and you still have to manually zoom.
