Should the French 'CR' (Calibre recherche) match the 'Qualité recherche' see elsewhere

I made a project and the ‘CR’ tag were applied to some photos. I didn’t know what it meant but now I see that it means ‘Calibre recherche’. I was wondering if this could be uniform throughout the website and tags : if the vocabulary is ‘Qualité recherche’, then the short version should be ‘QR’.

The problem with CR and QR is that they look like ‘Critically endangered’ and ‘QR code’. So another option would be to make it ‘Grade recherche (GR)’ or ‘Niveau recherche NR’ or something similar which do not seem to conflict with similar conservation acronyms.

Anyway, what do you think about making it uniform throughout the site?

Hi,
These translation are currently inconsistent indeed. As a contributor on the iNaturalist Crowdin, I’ve been trying to add consistent translations throughout the websites and apps. It seems some of the previous translations were made by people with different ideas, some of which weren’t familiar with iNaturalist itself. There are still a lot to fix.

“Calibre recherche” and “Grade recherche” use uncommon terms in everyday life that could be confusing for some people. I first thought of using “Niveau recherche” for this translation, but later changed my idea. The Observation Grade is assigned on iNaturalist by using the DQA (Data Quality Assessment), which is translated as the EQD (Évaluation de la qualité des données). Using the term “Qualité Recherche” directly refers to this process while “Niveau Recherche” doesn’t.

The only drawback I can see is the one you’re pointing, as it would be abbreviated as Q R. However, I’m uncertain people would confuse it with QR Code in the context it is used.

Also, I don’t know where to change the abbreviation. I’ve tried to look for it for some time and I’ve never been able to locate it.

Amazing! Thanks for the information! I see the challenge. Another solution would be to have a small pictogram (like a microscope or something like that). The advantage is that you can connect whatever ‘lab or research’ image with the idea ‘qualité recherche’. a ‘besoin ID’ could be a ‘?’ or a magnifying glass with a ‘?’ so it’s clear that it needs scrutiny!

This would solve the issue :)

And basically, this could be added to the legend page https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000170218-what-do-the-map-symbols-mean- :feather:
