Specific geographical individual ranges on projects

I’m wondering if it is possible to have project that has very specific geographical ranges that can’t just be added in through typing in the place name.
For a university research project I am looking to add around 500 locations (photo for example), many of which aren’t named on maps so I am wondering if it is possible to draw polygons or something similar?

If not, is it possible to make a project so that observations are not automatically added but added by the author of the observation or added by the owner of the project?

You can create custom places: go to the More menu and select Places then look for the “Add a New Place” link. However doing it for 500 individual places would be quite time consuming. You can however upload KML files so you may be able to add them into one Place (I’m assuming it accepts isolated polygons but it may not).
