Why don't these observations show up in this project? - "Official" Topic

I have signed up for the CWF BIoblitz project. It seems that my observations are not being automatically included in that project. Do I need to do something special?

Hi Brenda, welcome to the forum. Check out the first post in this topic I moved your post to. If your question isn’t answered, please provide some examples of observations you think should be in the project but are not (e.g. with links, screenshots, etc).

Last week I created a new Project, New York Master Naturalists, whose criteria are:

  • Location: New York, US (New York state).
  • Project Members Only.

So far, 19 members have joined. However, only 6 of them show as Observers. I’ve confirmed that New York Observations for members other than those 6 are not showing up in the Project. Some examples:

I can’t find any explanation for this. Help!

It looks like you chose Project Members Only, but also Include Users (with a list of users). You only want to do one of those two, more details at https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000176699

Thank you! That fixed it. Now 17 of the 19 are Observers. The other two don’t have any Observations yet.

I can’t remember if I ever created a Project for specific users, or members only. Now I know why! ;-)

Hello, I’m new here. Could someone explain to me why some observations aren’t appearing in my project even though I’ve complied with all the defined criteria?

Project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/trilha-biotecnologica-uenf
Example of observation not appearing:

Could someone confirm that my KML file is correct?

the coordinate uncertainty value associated with your coordinates (represented by the circle around the pin on the map) exceeds the bounding box of your place by a fair margin.

So in my image below, the circle around your point exceeds the yellow dotted line box. The edges of your circle need to be constrained inside to be included in the project. This is because your uncertainty value is basically saying you saw that beetle somewhere inside that circle, and if parts of that circle are outside your place, you’re effectively saying you may not have actually seen the beetle inside the place. So in that case, the project won’t capture it, because the project is designed to capture things that definitely are in that place, not things that may or may not be

So if you want it to be included, you need to reduce the coordinate uncertainty. It’s important, however, that you only do this if you are actually sure about where you saw the beetle; don’t reduce the circle just for the sake of including it in the project.

Thank you very much for the clarification!
I’m sure of the exact location, how do I reduce the uncertainty of the coordinates?

no worries

In the observation, just click edit, and then you can either manually resize the circle by dragging a handle on an edge, or input a value for the radius (eg 5 m)

and welcome to the forum!

Now it worked, thanks!!! :star_struck:
