Why the iNat app works slower and slower?

I’ve installed the iNat app since I’ve started posting here, but at my 500th ob it started acting strange: overheating my phone, multiplying obs, and others. Why? Does it also heappen to you? If so, how did you stop this ‘fallout’? Curious to hear your advice.

I’ve been using the android version of the app for over 6000 observations and it’s been mostly fine. no overheating

you can try posting in Bug Reports . provide as much information as you can, please.

You might try logging out on the app and then logging back in.

That fixed it for me years ago when I first started.

My guess is the OP could speed up things optimizing their phone, either using the in-built optimizer function or clearing out the app’s cache in the settings, or simply reinstalling the app after deleting it (logging in again in the freshly installed app brings everything back, so nothing will be lost).

I’d also check how much free space is left on the phone. Operations such as installing apps, copying and uploading files or even deleting files require sufficient working space on the device for this to be able to perform them. Try getting out of a confined space when you can’t even move enough to get a foothold, for instance. The download folder and the photo folder are likely full (that’s often the main reason).

Also, if the phone has an optional storage card inserted, are we sure new apps are installed there and not on the internal storage space?

Oh! Per @tiwane logging out and back in should help that, too. :)

It’s always been like that for me.
The biggest problem is when I scroll through observations to identify, the infinite scrolling overloads the app and shuts it down.
It’s impossible for me to identify effectively via app.

The problem is… I’ve already uninstalled the app and reinstalled it, logged in and out twice but it still won’t work properly…

you, too, may benefit from submitting a formal Bug Reports ;)

The app isn’t designed for identification so you might encounter issues when doing that en masse. Some people opt to use the browser instead when identifying on the go because it can be a lot more efficient, albeit a little difficult to use since it’s not designed for mobile use either.

What does happen sometimes to me is that the cached thumbnails in the grid view get temporarily swapped around, creating a lot of funny combos.
Seems like poor internet coverage plays a role there. Fixes itself normally. If not, clearing the cache does it. My opinion: I don’t need to view cached thumbnails dating back to 2019 – the most recent 2 or 3 months are enough.

I get that too, but usually reloading the page fixes it.

After uninstalling it and reinstalling it after a lot of time, it stopped being so buggy so far, hopefully forever :) thank you all guys for your advise!

I do most of my identifying on the phone. I have to clear the cache constantly.

As you hinted, infinite scolling is a problem there. If you start by slicing the pack (e.g. just look at a small geographic or temporal piece of the observations to be IDd), it is much easier.

Please let me know if more detail would be useful.

I do that too, it helps but eventually I reach the point where the app starts to get slow and buggy anyway.
Personally I just hope that the iNaturalist Next app will get rid of all infinite scrolling entirely.
