I’m happy to be a maverick (sometimes an honour) but this is odd.
It’s because C. rufus is currently grafted under Life. It needs moving. :)
iNat has already flagged this. Does that mean it needs staff to fix it?
I thank you both for your quick responses but I don’t understand what grafting means. I have often added/pulled in Australian ant species from AntWeb which were were not available on iNat and have never had this problem before?
Sometimes when pulling species into iNat from externally, species fail to ‘attach’ to their genus (why this is the case, I’m unsure to be honest). The same thing can happen with genera failing to attach to the next highest level. It’s a simple fix, and just requires a curator to edit the taxon and manually attach (graft) it to where it should be
The problem arose in this case because Camponotus was “locked”, i.e. not allowed to accept more species hence, with no idea of where it belonged, the newly imported taxon was grafted at the top of the tree of life.
Well why was Camponotus locked? That makes no sense at all!
The genus is locked intentionally because curators need to manually assign each newly added species to its respective subgenus. If not locked, they graft directly to the genus (going unnoticed) which causes unintentional disagreements. The addition of ungrafted taxa creates an alert/flag for curators to notice and follow up on.
