Saving individual observations (like 'Favorites' observations) to a list

Hesitant to request this as a feature because perhaps I have overlooked an existing feature.

I’m asking if it’s possible to create a list (such as the existing lists for taxa that you can create) of observations.

I know the “favorite observations” feature exists, but I’m wondering if there’s a way to create a list separate from that which can contain individual observations. I’m asking this because it would seriously help me declutter my list of observations: I could separate and create different lists for favorite images to look at, notable findings, observations to review later, etc.

Thank you!

I don’t think you can make lists like that (if you can, I’d like to know how, too) but I have made a traditional project with myself as the only user ( https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/curious-plants ) where I save observations I want to spend more time trying to ID or otherwise want to come back to and study. This works pretty well.

You could add tags to your observations (e.g., a “notable” tag), and then navigate to those tagged observations with the search filters. With the Explore search filters, you can also filter by username (e.g., ‘picklejar’) so you can see your notable observations.

Is your list bookmarked URLs? I make lots of folders and arrange them, and work thru them as it suits me. I never use tags, but I do like traditional and collection projects - depending on what you want to do with the obs.

There are a fair amount of previous threads/posts on the forum about this that may be worth looking through. Some examples:

But probably more out there with a more in-depth search.

The issue with trying to use projects to do this is that some users don’t allow their observation to be added to projects they don’t join themselves. I’m surprised there still isn’t a better function to do what they’re asking, even if it’s just to group and sort your own favorites.

Echoing the “traditional project” approach. It can be frustrating when you come across an obs that can’t be added to the project, but this approach is the least worst IMO. For the most part, it works out well.

True. I’ve had that problem before. In that case, I’ll fave the observation to at least have some record of it, but that’s not a great solution. It would be wonderful if one could sort and search faves, or add searchable tags to other people’s observations.

Alright, some replies:

The “Project” idea:
This seems like a good solution to me, but as swords brought up, not all users allow this. And also, I would like to avoid cluttering the project space with my various “folders”.

The “Tagging” idea:
I’m looking to save observations that are not mine, so unfortunately this does not work.

The “Bookmarking URLs” idea:
While this does technically work, I would really prefer to have the gallery view, which allows me to sort through the many observations by image rather than text.
Also, this wouldn’t carry between browsers or devices. Perhaps the method may then be to save the links on a web document (e.g. Google Document), but that would still be a sloppy fix…

Thank you everybody for your input!

Ah, disappointing. I hope they reconsider. I would really appreciate a way to create lists of observations, perhaps name-able by users themselves so it is not rigidly just a ‘favorite’ or ‘bookmark’ category. Thanks for sharing…
