Hi everyone, we just added new functionality to the “Me” screen of the iPhone app that allows you to search and sort through your own iNaturalist observations.
Here’s what’s new:
Search: Tap the new search icon in the top right of your “Me” page and look up any taxon. When you tap a species in the Species tab, you’ll be able to see all your observations of that species.
Sort: A new sort button in the bottom right of your “Me” page will let you order the observations by date added or date observed.
Map view: You can more easily see your observations by place.

Love that you can now see species and observations for a specific family on the same page, but sadly there’s no option currently to redo the search in a specific map area, which makes the old way feel a bit more purposeful still. Either way, good step in the right direction!
Yeah, I’d love a geograpic restriction as well. But for now, this is really helpful for cases where I’m talking to someone and want to show them a photo or an obs I’ve made. Or just to easily see if I’ve observed something before.
Solved: I went to the App Store and it showed an “Update” button (although I hadn’t received a notification for it). Clicked the button, the update was installed, and the new functionality showed up. Yeah!
What a simple and incredible change! I remember making a similar feedback report a few months ago. Super cool to see community feedback being listened to by the iNat team! These changes make it much more intuitive to look back at past observations rather than having to scroll through my entire list. As far as the geographic filtering goes, I found you can search for a specific taxa, go to the map view, and zoom in on an area. When the pins pop up, you can select each pin and it will open those observations! Great details and utilization of already existing functionality of the Explore tab.
Please add the word “iPhone” to the blog post title on inaturalist.org. I shouldn’t have to read half the post before finding out it doesn’t apply to me anyway.
Now we can do something on the app, that has been available with more and better options, on the website for years. So what did we gain? A redundant function.
Why not do something meaningfull with the app? Make it do something the website can’t!
This has been a feature consistently asked for by users via feedback. And personally, I find it really useful as I often want to bring up observations of certain taxa of mine when talking with others, and it’s much easier to do so in the app, via a quick taxon search, than any other method. I also like to quickly see if I’ve seen certain taxa before, and this is a quick way to do it. I suspect many others want it for similar reasons.
