Data export not including project-specific observation fields

Platform: Desktop

App version number, if a mobile app issue:

Browser, if a website issue: Google Chrome

Screenshots of what you are seeing:

Description of problem: I am trying to create an export of my project’s data so that I can summarize this year’s data for some end of year reporting, but when I create the export it will not include the project-specific observation fields.

Step 1: Define what I would like to export by checking the relevant boxes

Step 2: Create export

Step 3: Open downloaded .csv file and see that it does not include the relevant fields

I just tried in Chrome and it worked for me.

Clarifying question:
You screenshot shows a lot of observation fields, but most are not required for the project. There are only two required fields:

New observations…

  • must have observation field ‘Dead or alive’ filled out or must have observation field ‘Survey Route’ filled out

  • must be in taxon Testudines

https://www.inaturalist.org/project/john-ball-zoo-turtle-road-crossing/terms

so many of the cells are blank fyi. If this is unexpected behavior, you may want to address.

I experienced the same thing last week when downloading some data from my project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/erotylidae-feeding-preferences

When I selected the observation fields from the project observation fields section, I didn’t get them in the spreadsheet, but when I also selected them from the general observation field section, they did show up in the spreadsheet.

I’m on Microsoft Edge

You can see in the second screenshot that the final column included in the downloaded csv file was common name. Regardless of whether or not people answered a project-specific question when submitting an observation, I would expect that there would be a column on the download that shows the answers (or lack thereof) for the questions I selected.

The thing I am trying to solve is that those columns aren’t even showing up.

Have you tried downloading again? Or maybe you can provide more info about your process. As I mentioned above, the download worked fine for me using the general instructions you gave - all the columns were included, though 6 of the 8 were missing/contained no data for many observations.

I think this is the same bug, right? https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/observation-field-interaction-visited-flower-of-not-included-in-exports-when-checked-under-observation-fields-for-projects-but-not-observation-fields/70275

I’m not sure since I can’t replicate. I checked using the observation fields for projects and it worked fine/as expected.

Same issue! If I select “Observation Fields for Projects”, I get a weird download with a mishmash of observation fields.

Sorry, let me give more details.

This is the project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/caterpillar-rearing-group

This is what I selected:

And this is what I got:

The screenshot above doesn’t show any of the columns for observation fields (they would be to the right).

I know, but that’s what I get. :woman_shrugging:

I’m just confused because you said

but I don’t see any observation fields in the screenshot of the file.

I also just tested the export for

and the csv is fine and includes data for all observation fields as expected.

I suspect it only happens when the observation fields are both in your recent fields list and also in the project list. They made some changes to that code recently. https://github.com/inaturalist/inaturalist/issues/4652

Then a possible workaround might be to select the project fields from the recents list instead and get the data that way if anyone wants to try.

Yep, I get what I need if I just select all the observation fields.

I’m experiencing the same issue. I’m just trying to download the ‘field:interaction->preyed on’ for powerful owl observations from the Predators Project. I’ve tried multiple times (with different queries) and the last time I ended up getting a bunch of stuff that I didn’t click:

I’m using Chrome.

Did you try selecting the second one and not the first one?

I just tried it, and that one worked.

And if you choose both?

It also works (as in, there’s only 1 column for ‘field:interaction->preyed on,’ so it might just ignore the ‘Observation Fields for Projects’ section).
