Hey folks, new curator here so apologies for the newbie question if the answer is obvious. I requested curator privileges precisely to help curate broken links between iNat and Wikipedia, since I am part of a volunteer collective working on bridging the gap between the two projects and communities. I noticed a flag for Allium stellatum indicating that iNat is not showing the en.Wikipedia article on the taxon page, despite the fact that an English-language article exists and is correctly named. I tried overriding the automated link by specifying the exact title of the Wikipedia article, but it doesn’t seem to work. Is this a caching issue? And can someone generally explain why the autolink functionality doesn’t work here since the Wikipedia article title is an exact match for the binomial?
Hi! Welcome to curatorship!
I refreshed the Wiki link under that taxon (by clicking refresh within the wiki section), and it updated to the correct page. And that is now reflected. I may be wrong but I think at times it takes a while for the page to be cached. Refreshing forces that to happen sooner.
This is probably the buggiest part of iNat, so sometimes things just don’t work right. Refreshing the link often helps, but if you add the title you may need an underscore instead of spaces, as this is what is in the URL. As to why it doesn’t automatically link, that can be for a variety of reasons. Sometimes Wikidata is wrong, and sometimes it’s just wonky.
there is an open bug report for this issue here https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/wikipedia-links-requiring-curators-to-refresh-to-display/80803
