Not all observations uploading

Ah, okay, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.

(I found one more duplicate, BTW.)

The URL of the first ob in this batch is: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/34964824 and the last is https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/34964850 - supposed to be 15 obs but only 14 have recorded.

I don’t have any screenshots because I got no error messages and it’s a case of absence not presence…

11 of 13.

First ob in batch - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/35167674 to last ob - https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/35167695

@karoopixie, I’m not seeing the same errors in the logs on our end as I did before, so I suspect this is a different problem. Again, if I can’t see any errors, I need to know how to replicate the bug, which I can’t do unless I have a photo that consistently won’t upload, or a set of steps that consistently reproduces the problem (e.g. drag on photo X, add to Y projects, fill out Z observation fields, submit, everything succeeds but obs is not created). If you can’t provide that, perhaps you could start tagging your photos with unique identifiers so at least you can tell me which photo did not upload. If your photos have unique file names I might be able to work with that if you can tell me which photo isn’t getting turned into an observation after upload.

The original names of the 3 pics that didn’t make obs are:
2018-04-19–20.40.19 MM 32208 pattern geom.JPG (88 kb) (pic above)
2018-04-21–21.28.43 MM 32218 agrotis.JPG (166 kb)

2018-04-22–20.03.45 MM 32232 drep bifasciata.JPG (74 kb)

Is that what you’re asking for?

It seems to me that the problem usually comes in when I have added the Field Insect Life Stage to all but 1 ob in a batch.

The last lot of batches have been mostly insects, mostly moths. For each batch I add a pinned locality, Insect Life Stage field (to the insects), Habitat (S Afr) Field to all, and add them all to the Project Habitats (S Afr). If the locality of an ob is not at the pinned locality, then I revise that one by moving the pin or choosing a different pinned locality.

I do other things on other obs (obviously), but this has been the workflow on the two batches with dropped obs.

Does this help? Or have I misunderstood your requirements?

@pisum managed to find all my previous orphaned photos. Perhaps we can prevail upon their good nature to help us here again?

Weird, so for those three files, the photos exist, the observations exist, but the observations haven’t been indexed (i.e. added to our search engine), so they look like they don’t exist on the site. I’m struggling to think of a reason why these wouldn’t index. They index just fine right now.

How consistent is this? Does the problem happen when you try to upload the same file again? If it’s consistent, can you email a copy of that file to help@inaturalist.org? The uploads here in the Forum are unfortunately stripped of their metadata, so we can’t really test them under the conditions you’re using.

How about if you don’t add all those fields and projects and such? Do you still experience this?

Have you tried uploading at a different time of day, or in a different browser? I’m not sure why either of those things would matter, but who knows.

Ken-ichi, I need to do more testing and will get back to you with results. But before I go any further - you say the photos exist and the observations exist - can you see them in the db?

I have just noticed that one of above photos now has an ob! The Agrotis is here https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/35167675.

The other 2 are still awol.

Interestingly, with the appearance of the Agrotis, my obs count went up by one on my observations (Explore) page, but not on my profile or on a particular ob page (as of this moment).

interesting. i wonder if this count mismatch is fixed, whether the same kind of fix can be applied for other count mismatch cases (see https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/zero-observations-for-user-with-one-observation/4407)?

Just uploaded a batch of 11 obs. Initially 1 did not show, but did appear on refresh. My obs count on my Profile page is fixed too (without the 2 that have still not appeared).

Consistencies:
Missing obs always have only 1 photo.
Missing obs are never the first or last in a batch.

Don’t know if any of this helps in finding the problem…

I have made some discoveries!!

I have ‘found’ the other 2 missing obs, but they don’t load as pages. On my calendar I can see both obs. For the first one, this is my calendar:

But if I try and open the ob I get the spinning wheel of death:

And on my Edit Obs page it’s still missing:

The observation link is https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/34964843
The image link is https://static.inaturalist.org/photos/55097063/small.jpeg?1572192764

I also found the other one on my calendar page:

With the same behaviour.

The observation link is https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/35167681
The image link is https://static.inaturalist.org/photos/55423871/small.jpeg?1572624439

So far all new symptoms you’re reporting are consistent with obs not being indexed, but don’t help to explain why they’re not getting indexed. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/35167675 is working b/c I manually indexed it.

Info that still might help:

Just happened to me. only 3 of 9 obs uploaded. The upload load page has been stuck on ‘saving’ for 30 minutes.
24 images and 1 sound file in the batch. Successfully uploaded 7 images and the soundfile.
All obs had 1 tag 1 project and 1 field.
Will now try upload the 6 unsuccessful obs.
Chrome Version 76.0.3809.132 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Vynbos, before re-uploading, check first if they are on your calendar page for that day - see my comment above.

Ken-ichi, I have not tried any of those things yet on these batches. But I did on the previous set of problem children and my results are above - https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/not-all-observations-uploading/4946/24

All photos that I have re-uploaded in the past have uploaded just fine.

Too late, I already uploaded the second time. Worked fine.

No prob. Check you calendar page to see if you have duplicates then.

I checked the calendar while the batch was uploading and the missing obs weren’t there. Got no duplicates having uploaded them again.
